Over the next few minutes, here are are a few checks you can do to make sure your site can be found.

Is My Website Blocking Google?

The first question is does Google know about my website? If they don’t know it exists then well that’s probably the answer. It find out go to the Google search page and type in

Is my site Google blocking my site

instead of yoursite.com actually enter the name of your website. What you should see is a result for every page in your website, if you see a bunch of listings then you are are not blocking Google.

Pages Google can see

What It My Google Results Are Blank?

Google has not indexed this website

First thing you do is find something to knock over, nothing huge or regrettable but it should have a little weight to it…. No don’t knock anything over I was joking (no I wasn’t) it’s not that big a deal. Good news if this is the case the worse has already happened and it only gets better from here. This happened to my friends at Remarkable Liquids. After I saw that there site did not have any listings I checked their robots.txt file. I know friggin robots are intimidating, especially when they go around blocking websites, right? No actually this is normally something that your developer did for good reason but forgot to change when the site went live. This is happening a lot lately. so how can you be sure? Go to
yoursite.com/robots.txt
What you should see is this

non blocking robots.txt

This means that your site is not blocking anything If you see this

But if you see this dreaded front slash!!!!!

Blocking robots.txt

That Means you are blocking the entire site! Of course there are other things you may see in that file that are blocking parts of you site, if you are wondering what the other stuff in the robots.txt file means post them in the comments below. The big thing here is
Disallow: /
That simple “/” is telling the search engines not to look at your awesome content! Now if you feel comfortable doing so go ahead and remove that / and you are all set, in due time, maybe a week or so test it again, you should see that Google is now seeing all your pages.

What is a sitemap and do I have one?

It is not enough just to unblock your site though, Google wants you to give them your content in a easily digestible form. That form is called Sitemap, do you have one? One way to test your site is to look for the file online. Go to
yoursite.com/sitemap.xml
You should see a bunch of code that does not make a whole lot of sense. If you do not then you may not have a sitemap delivering up your goodies in a nice presentation.
